Purpose: This paper examines the decision to move from decentralized SAP Extended Warehouse Management to embedded EWM in SAP S/4HANA and aims to provide practitioners with a clear basis for choosing a deployment, selecting a migration approach, and sequencing the cutover so the warehouse returns online with its stock intact.
Methodology: This paper develops a proposed practitioner framework through conceptual synthesis of SAP product documentation and selected enterprise-system and warehouse research. It compares deployment models and migration routes and specifies a proposed cutover checklist. An illustrative cost scenario is constructed from explicitly stated planning assumptions; it is not a measured benchmark or validated prediction.
Proposed framework and implications: Embedded EWM can reduce separate-system administration and some cross-system replication for shared objects, whereas decentralized EWM can support architectural isolation and independent lifecycle planning. Deployment selection should consider measured peak workload, interfaces, system ownership, and release constraints. The proposed cutover framework prioritizes the treatment of open work, stock and HU reconciliation, data migration, documented acceptance thresholds, rehearsals, and a rollback decision. In a hypothetical scenario, assumed annual gross savings total US$250,000–US$620,000; neither the ranges nor project payback have been empirically validated.
Unique contribution to theory, practice, and policy: The paper connects evidence on enterprise-system implementation with SAP EWM migration practice and provides a practitioner-oriented framework linking deployment choice, migration route, cutover discipline, and recurring landscape costs. It emphasizes that deployment should follow transaction volume, lifecycle, and landscape strategy rather than technology novelty, and that repeated mock cutovers are central to migration readiness.
